The City of Poughkeepsie has been awarded $10 million as part of the eighth round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI), according to an announcement by Governor Kathy Hochul. This funding is part of a broader state effort, with each of New York's 10 economic development regions receiving $10 million, totaling a $200 million commitment aimed at transforming downtown areas into vibrant neighborhoods.
Former mayor and current New York State Senator Rob Rolison commented on the award: "This investment is a game-changer for the City of Poughkeepsie, reinforcing the ongoing transformation into a dynamic and thriving downtown. I have worked for years, with partners in the City like Mayor Flowers, to strengthen the City’s economy. I’ve seen firsthand the dedication of local leaders and residents in shaping a stronger, more vibrant future and this funding will help build on that progress, bringing new opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. I can't wait to see the lasting impact this will have on our community."
To qualify for DRI or NY Forward program funds, communities must be certified under Governor Hochul's Pro-Housing Communities Program. This initiative recognizes municipalities that are actively working to increase their housing supply. The program allocates up to $650 million annually in discretionary funds to such communities; currently, 287 across New York have achieved certification. Additionally, Governor Hochul proposes an extra $100 million for infrastructure projects necessary for creating new housing in these communities and another $10.5 million for technical assistance.
Poughkeepsie's downtown corridor is crucial as it serves as Dutchess County's civic, commercial, entertainment, and transportation hub. It attracts numerous commuters daily through its Metro North Station and hosts popular venues like Bardavon 1869 Opera House and Chance Theatre. Historically central to commerce and industry in the region, Poughkeepsie aims to revitalize its Main Street Corridor as a bustling city center linked by multi-modal transportation.
