The federal government is considering implementing a new rule that could significantly impact volunteer and career fire departments. This proposed regulation, known as OSHA Rule 1910.156, has raised concerns among those who rely on volunteer firefighters for their safety.
A petition has been launched to oppose the rule, with a deadline for public comments set for July 21. According to proponents of the petition, over 70% of fire protection in New York is provided by volunteers.
"I OPPOSE OSHA Rule 1910.156 and support keeping our local firefighters," reads the petition statement.
