On February 20, 2025, Congressman Lawler criticized Governor Kathy Hochul's handling of New York State prisons. He stated: "Kathy Hochul has lost control of New York State's prisons. Sending in the National Guard after creating a mess with the HALT Act and forcing corrections officers to work 16-24 hour days is not the answer."
Later that day, he shared his experience visiting Suffern Middle School. He tweeted: "I had a fantastic time at Suffern Middle School, where I talked to students about the Constitution, my job in Congress, and the bright future ahead.
