The Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services has announced the opening of applications for its Veterans Microgrant Program. This competitive grant initiative offers one-time grants to local nonprofit organizations or municipalities to enhance activities and programming that address veterans' needs and recognize their service. Applications are available online via Dutchess County’s grant portal and will be accepted on a rolling basis while funds last.

Grants of up to $15,000 per organization or municipality can be used for various purchases or needs, including equipment, resources, or other one-time expenses aimed at enhancing program offerings and making them more accessible to veterans. The 2024 budget for Dutchess County includes $100,000 allocated for this program.

Veterans Services Director Adam Roche expressed his gratitude: “I am grateful County Executive Sue Serino and the Dutchess County Legislature have continued the microgrant program, which not only helps our veterans but also all the organizations throughout Dutchess County that work daily to serve our vets. The grant clearly acknowledges the value of our veterans and ensures they are being cared for in a manner worthy of their service to our country.”

Nonprofit organizations or municipalities currently offering specific programs benefiting United States Armed Forces veterans in Dutchess County are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to entities that do not already contract with Dutchess County for veteran services. Organizations or municipalities that received funds from the 2022 or 2023 Veterans Microgrant programs are not eligible for this round.

Examples of possible funding awards include:

- Enhancement or expansion of current programs or services offered to veterans

- New programming provided by agencies already serving veterans

- Purchase of plaques, banners, or monuments honoring veterans

- Expenses associated with events such as picnics or holiday parties honoring veterans

- General capital infrastructure improvements including physical structures, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical work, security enhancements, furniture, fixtures, and equipment specifically intended for veteran services

An example from previous years includes the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 666 in Beacon receiving a $14,000 microgrant in 2022. The funds were used to purchase new kitchen appliances for meal preparation during veteran meetings, upgrade lighting and countertop space for food preparation, increase cabinet storage space, replace flooring for better cleaning efficiency, install a stainless steel sink suitable for large pots, and replace water-damaged ceiling tiles.

Only one application per organization will be accepted. Funds must be utilized within one year of award. Detailed instructions and guidance on applying are available online.
