Assemblyman Anil Beephan, Jr. (R,C-East Fishkill) led a press conference today, joined by legislative colleagues from the Assembly and state Senate, as they renewed their efforts to pass “Melanie’s Law” and move the legislation forward.
“Melanie’s Law” (A.6026) seeks to address a loophole that currently limits orders of protection, leaving certain immediate family members vulnerable. The bill was introduced in response to the tragic death of Melanie Chianese, who was killed by her mother’s ex-partner. Melanie, an adult at the time, was not covered by her mother’s order of protection, highlighting the need for this proposed legislation.
"I proudly stand with a bipartisan delegation in supporting Melanie's Law. I urge the state Assembly to swiftly pass this bill, echoing the Senate's support from last year. Let's enact this common-sense change, ensuring our domestic violence victims can access the protections they rightfully deserve. Thank you to Assemblymember Cunningham, Sen. Hinchey and Sen. Rolison for their leadership," Beephan stated during the press conference.
The push for “Melanie’s Law” comes with a unified call for bipartisan cooperation to prioritize the safety and well-being of domestic violence victims. The aim is to ensure that no loopholes exist that could put individuals at risk, especially in cases like Melanie Chianese's.
The Assemblyman’s plea for swift action and bipartisan support underscores the urgency and importance of passing this legislation to provide necessary protections for those vulnerable to domestic violence.
