Dutchess County Sheriff's Office - 2022-2023 School Year Safety Tips

10

With most children starting the 2022-2023 school year this week, Sheriff Kirk A. Imperati offers these safety tips:

Be mindful of bus stops, drive slowly, and watch for children walking in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks.

School bus red flashing lights and extended stop-arm signal indicate that the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off the bus. All drivers MUST stop a safe distance away from the bus and not move until the red lights stop flashing, and the stop sign has been folded back. This includes approaching a school bus that has come to a stop opposite of you on a divided highway.

Lastly, if you see something suspicious on or near school grounds, make sure you report it immediately by calling 911.

Have a great first day of school!
