With summer heat arriving, older adults can be among the most vulnerable to sustained high temperatures. That’s why the Dutchess County Office for the Aging offers a cooling-assistance benefit through the state’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
HEAP eligibility has been expanded this year by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The HEAP cooling qualification is no longer limited to those who have a documented medical condition exacerbated by heat. To qualify, applicants must meet income threshold that vary for household size.
The program covers the cost of an air conditioning unit and installation. When air conditioning installation is not possible, a fan can be provided.
For more details on how to apply, older adults and their caregivers can call the OFA HEAP division at 845-486-2553 or email zserrano@dutchessny.gov.
