Assemblyman Matt Slater, a ranking minority member on the Committee on Libraries and Education Technology, has announced state aid for library construction funds totaling $348,850. The funding is designated for libraries in Putnam and Westchester counties.

The Westchester Library System’s Somers Library will receive $210,187 to create a 'Teen Space,' aiming to increase space for teens and provide a more welcoming environment. Additionally, $138,663 will go to the Mid-Hudson Library's Patterson Library Association in Putnam County to enhance its adult collection area with new reading niches.

These allocations are part of $34 million in capital funds earmarked for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects in the FY2023-2024 State Budget.

Public libraries across New York face significant renovation needs. A recent survey indicated that over $1.75 billion is needed for library construction and renovation projects. More than half of New York's 1,000 public library buildings are over 60 years old, with another third exceeding three decades in age. Many libraries struggle with accommodating users with disabilities, energy inefficiency, outdated electrical wiring preventing adequate internet access, insufficient space for growing collections, meeting spaces, or public access computers.

"This funding is a critical investment in our local libraries," stated Slater. "By creating a more welcoming environment for teens at the Somers Library and enhancing the Patterson Library Association’s adult collection area, we are not only improving the functionality of these spaces but also enriching the experience for all patrons. Libraries are the heart of our communities."

Looking ahead to FY2024-2025 State Budget plans, an additional $44 million has been allocated for future projects set to be announced in Summer 2025. This marks a $10 million increase from the previous fiscal year as part of ongoing efforts to support library services across New York.
