Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino has announced a reimagined Youth Opportunity Union (YOU) initiative as part of her 2025 Executive Budget. This initiative aims to expand youth services by creating a collaborative network involving youth service providers, community organizations, and municipalities.
To emphasize this new approach, Serino introduced a logo symbolizing the united network's goal of promoting opportunities for youth across the county. The budget allocates $715,000 for YOU funding to assist in developing or expanding programs and resources for young people.
The allocation includes $250,000 for Drop-in Center Grants to establish safe spaces for youth at local libraries and community centers. Additionally, $75,000 is designated for Mini Grants supporting grassroots recreation programs. Summer Camp Scholarships will receive $200,000 to provide enriching experiences that help youth develop life skills and build friendships.
Furthermore, the Youth Police Initiative (YPI) will be expanded with $190,000 in funding. This program aims to strengthen relationships between law enforcement officers and youth by training new officers and conducting master classes for trainers.
Serino also detailed progress on the Youth Opportunity Union facility in Poughkeepsie following a $10 million NY SWIMS grant award. This funding enables a fresh evaluation of the project's design and operational plan focusing on an aquatics center and a youth services hub. Dutchess County seeks partnerships with community organizations to ensure high-quality program offerings while maintaining sustainability.
Serino is set to present her 2025 Executive Budget at the Dutchess County Legislature Chambers on October 29, 2024. The presentation will be available live on dutchessny.gov/budget2025. A tele-town hall forum will also be held that evening for residents to discuss the proposed budget.
