Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt, joined by Senators Rob Rolison, Alexis Weik, and Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick as well as Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, called for the Governor and Legislature to include meaningful discovery reforms in the upcoming state budget. During a gathering with members of the Senate Republican Conference, they underscored the necessity of addressing issues within the criminal justice system to better empower law enforcement in protecting victims, families, and communities.
Senator Rob Rolison stated, "For far too long, our criminal justice system has favored offenders over victims, leaving families and communities vulnerable. It’s far past time for the law to be changed in favor of crime victims. We need real, substantive discovery reforms that give law enforcement the tools they need to do their jobs effectively and ensure justice is served. I urge the Governor and Legislature to make these critical changes in this year’s final budget."
Their push for changes aims to balance the current system, which they argue disproportionality supports offenders, by providing law enforcement with better resources through legislative reforms in the final budget.
