Dia Art Foundation has announced a new immersive sound project, "Echoes from the Borderlands," created by Valeria Luiselli, Ricardo Giraldo, and Leo Heiblum. This installation explores the complex histories of the Mexico-United States border through soundscapes and narratives. It will be on display at Dia Chelsea from December 11, 2024, to March 6, 2025.
Visitors will experience this narrative in four six-hour segments dedicated to each border state: California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The piece addresses social issues like native genocide, migration, reproductive rights, and environmental destruction. Jessica Morgan of Dia stated that the work challenges artistic boundaries while addressing critical social issues.
"Echoes from the Borderlands" integrates field recordings and interviews to bring attention to ongoing struggles along the border. Humberto Moro emphasized its capacity to transcend politics through art and engage with historical echoes still relevant today.
Kamilah Foreman noted that the project weaves historical and contemporary narratives about colonized lands. A booklet titled "Study One: Call You When I Get Home" will accompany the installation for further engagement.
The exhibition was curated by Kamilah N. Foreman and Humberto Moro with support from various institutions including Harvard University’s ArtLab and La Corriente del Golfo Podcast.
