Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino has announced her 2025 Executive Budget, emphasizing support for older adults in the community. The budget includes funding for new programs and the expansion of existing services aimed at benefiting seniors.
"Older adults have contributed so much to Dutchess County throughout their lives, and they deserve to age gracefully and with dignity," said Serino. "Our seniors are the backbone of our community, and the Executive Budget ensures they have the support and resources they need."
The budget outlines several initiatives designed to provide socialization, recreation, transportation, and wellness opportunities for seniors. These include mobile office hours by the Dutchess County Office for the Aging (OFA) to connect with seniors who face barriers traveling to Poughkeepsie. Additionally, there is increased funding for site managers at OFA's eight Friendship Centers.
Homebound seniors remain a priority with continued funding for OFA’s Homebound Vaccination Program. The budget also allocates funds to expand the "GoGo Grandparent" program, offering free rides for registered OFA clients to non-emergency medical appointments or visits to family members in care facilities.
In 2025, OFA will work towards earning the AARP “Age-Friendly Communities” certification. This would place Dutchess County in a network known for safe streets, improved housing and transportation options, and access to essential services.
OFA Director Todd Tancredi praised Serino's commitment: "Her commitment to enhancing services and resources for our seniors demonstrates true leadership and compassion."
The budget also supports older adults wishing to "age in place" through the Senior Citizen Owner-Occupied Property Rehabilitation Program. This initiative helps low- and moderate-income senior households make necessary repairs or upgrades.
These initiatives complement existing offerings like nutrition programs, health insurance counseling, transportation options, home care connections, and social events such as the annual Senior Prom.
Serino emphasized empowering seniors: "We are working every day to help ensure older adults can live life to its fullest here in Dutchess County."
Serino will present her 2025 Executive Budget on October 29 at 3 p.m., viewable live on dutchessny.gov/budget2025. A tele-town hall forum will follow at 6:30 p.m., allowing residents to discuss the proposed budget.
