The average cost of a cybersecurity incident in the public sector is $2.6 million, encompassing repairs, ransom payments, and legal fees, according to a 2023 IBM report on data breaches in the U.S. To assist municipal leaders, school districts, higher education administrators, fire and police agencies, and IT professionals working with public entities in staying informed about the latest cybersecurity trends and threats, the Dutchess County Office of Central and Information Services (OCIS), in partnership with Marist College, will host its third Hudson Valley Cyber Security Summit. This free event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18th at Marist College in Poughkeepsie.
"Cyber-readiness is ever-evolving," said OCIS Commissioner Stephen Oscarlece. "It is critical to not only have a cybersecurity plan but to continually revisit it and learn about new technologies to stay ahead of potential threats. Our Cyber Security Summits have been very well-received by local public sector organizations and we are pleased to host this third annual event at Marist College to share updates from experts, resources, and networking opportunities. By knowing what threats are out there as technology continues to evolve, as well as what tools are available, public sector organizations can be better prepared for and protect against possible cyber security attacks and maintain citizens’ trust."
At the summit, experts including representatives from private sector industry leaders as well as New York State and Federal Government agencies will discuss topics such as:
- Budget-conscious resources available to help improve cybersecurity programs;
- How artificial intelligence (AI) is being used by both protectors and adversaries;
- How quickly a cyber-attack can unfold for an organization.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Marist College Student Center and is free for those working in or with the public sector. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., accompanied by a complimentary networking breakfast. Advance registration is required by Monday, June 17th at DutchessNY.gov/CyberSummit.
