Assemblyman Matt Slater and State Senator Peter Harckham have announced the successful passage of legislation in both the New York State Assembly and Senate to dedicate a section of State Route 35 in Westchester County. This dedication honors Purple Heart recipients from the region, recognizing their sacrifices for the nation. The selected stretch is near Lasdon Park, home to the Trail of Honor.

The highway system, used by millions daily, was constructed by many from the Greatest Generation who also served in uniform. This new legislation aims to honor those who received the Purple Heart for their service and sacrifice.

“There are few honors more sacred than the Purple Heart, a symbol of the immense sacrifice made by our nation’s heroes,” said Assemblyman Slater. “This dedication assures that Westchester’s Purple Heart recipients are forever remembered. I’m proud to have sponsored this legislation in the Assembly and thank Sen. Harckham for championing it in the Senate.”

Senator Harckham emphasized, “It’s essential that we honor and respect the veterans who have bravely defended our nation.” He added that dedicating this part of Route 35 is a meaningful recognition of those who served courageously. “I look forward to Governor Hochul signing this legislation,” he said.

Eugene Lang, a local resident and Purple Heart recipient, expressed his gratitude: “I am so glad to see this project get done.” He acknowledged Neil Gross’s efforts alongside him in honoring fellow recipients.

Somers Town Supervisor Rob Scorrano remarked on the significance of designating Route 35 as a memorial highway: “Each time someone travels this road, they’ll be reminded of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of our Purple Heart recipients.”

Assemblyman Matt Slater represents parts of Putnam and Westchester counties including several towns such as Somers and Yorktown. Senator Pete Harckham represents areas within Putnam County as well as various locations across Rockland and Westchester Counties.
