Aaron Leonard, a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Army, has dedicated his post-military career to supporting veterans and first responders through outdoor adventure programs. After retiring in 2014 following over 27 years of service, Leonard recognized the difficulties many veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. He utilized his personal experiences with outdoor activities to aid in their health and well-being.
Leonard began his work with the Sierra Club Military Outdoors in 2015 and later became the Executive Director of Guardian Revival’s Another Summit program in 2021. His efforts have trained hundreds of veterans as outdoor leaders, providing thousands with opportunities to connect with nature.
In addition to these roles, Leonard founded and chairs the Outdoor Rx Coalition in New York. The coalition aims to enhance access to state parks for more than 770,000 veterans residing in New York. He also advises the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Task Force on Outdoor Recreation for Veterans.
Currently serving as CEO of Guardian Revival, a nonprofit based in Beacon, New York, Leonard leads initiatives focused on improving mental health for military personnel, veterans, first responders, and their families at no cost. The organization offers eight programs including Another Summit and Boots & Paws.
Leonard is actively involved in his community as a volunteer firefighter and Lieutenant with Cold Spring Fire Company No. 1 and holds membership at American Legion Post 275. He lives in Cold Spring, New York with his wife Leslie and their five children.
“Mr. Leonard is a nationally recognized leader in outdoor adventure education,” noted a spokesperson from Guardian Revival. “He regularly speaks at recreation conferences regarding the benefits of outdoor programs designed for the veteran community.”
