Assemblyman Matt Slater, along with local officials from the 94th Assembly District, is urging Governor Kathy Hochul and Public Service Commission Chairman Rory M. Christian to address the soaring utility bills affecting Hudson Valley families. In a letter to both officials, Slater and other local leaders have called for a reevaluation of New York's energy policies and enhanced consumer protections.
Slater expressed concern over the significant increase in utility bills faced by residents, stating, "Hudson Valley residents are being crushed by rapidly increasing utility bills—some have seen their bills quadruple overnight with no explanation or justification." He emphasized the need for immediate action from Governor Hochul and Chairman Christian, adding that "New Yorkers should not be forced to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table."
Reports indicate that Con Edison has proposed an 11.4% hike in electricity rates and a 13.3% rise in gas rates, potentially increasing annual consumer expenses by up to $2,000. Additionally, NYSEG's "recovery charge" has introduced unexpected fees for ratepayers, while electricity supply costs have surged without prior notice.
In response to these challenges, Slater has put forward two legislative proposals aimed at safeguarding consumers. He noted the urgency of the situation: “I continue to hear from constituents daily who have been blindsided by outrageous utility bills. This is an economic emergency that cannot be ignored.”
Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman criticized the Public Service Commission's handling of rate increases and acknowledged Slater's efforts: “Our residents are suffering under the whims of the Public Service Commission when it comes to rate increases... I would personally like to thank Assemblyman Slater for fighting for transparency in regard to these rate hikes.”
Putnam Valley Supervisor Jacqueline Annabi highlighted the strain on local families and businesses due to rising costs: “Rising utility costs are placing a heavy strain on Putnam Valley families and businesses... Urgent action is needed.” She commended Slater for his advocacy efforts.
Somers Supervisor Robert Scorrano echoed these sentiments, stressing the impact on Hudson Valley communities: “Skyrocketing utility costs are pushing Hudson Valley families and businesses to the brink, and enough is enough.”
