The Dia Art Foundation is set to present "Echoes from the Borderlands," an immersive sound installation created by Valeria Luiselli, Ricardo Giraldo, and Leo Heiblum. This project explores the complex histories of the U.S.–Mexico border through a sonic journey that spans from the San Diego–Tijuana coastline to the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibition will be available for public viewing at Dia Chelsea from December 11, 2024, to March 6, 2025.

The sound piece invites visitors to engage with its narrative across four six-hour segments. Each segment focuses on a different borderland state: California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. As audiences immerse themselves in these stories, they are prompted to reflect on the social, political, and economic tensions that have shaped these regions over centuries. The work's timing coincides with discussions surrounding critical issues as the United States approaches its presidential election in 2024.

Jessica Morgan, Dia’s Nathalie de Gunzburg Director, stated: “At Dia, our mission is to provide artists with the freedom and space to create ambitious works that challenge the boundaries of artistic expression... Echoes from the Borderlands truly embodies this mission.”

The installation combines soundscapes with archival materials and interviews to address themes such as migration and environmental destruction. Valeria Luiselli describes their contributions as adding "one more layer" to collective understandings of these topics.

Humberto Moro, Dia’s deputy director of program, remarked on the project's significance: “Echoes from the Borderlands brings the histories and lived experiences of the borderlands into sharp focus... It challenges us to listen...to echoes of the past that continue to resonate today.”

Kamilah Foreman added: “The voices in Echoes from the Borderlands offer a profound narrative... It’s a testament to art as a means to transform collective memory.”

Alongside this exhibition is a chapbook titled "Study One: Call You When I Get Home," providing further engagement with this project. A QR code within allows readers access to an abridged version of this sonic exploration.
