Two libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System have been awarded close to $250,000 in state funding for construction and renovation projects. Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C–Yorktown) announced the awards, which are part of a larger $44 million capital fund included in New York’s FY2024–2025 State Budget for public library improvements statewide.
The funds aim to address accessibility and energy efficiency issues in local libraries. According to Slater, “Libraries give our communities so much, whether it’s resources for learning, technology or just a place to come together. If we want them to keep playing that role, we have to invest in them, modernize their spaces and make sure they’re ready to serve the next generation.”
Slater added that many libraries across New York face challenges due to aging infrastructure. “The need for library upgrades across New York is enormous, with many buildings more than a century old and struggling to meet modern demands. Many facilities lack accessibility for people with disabilities, have outdated electrical wiring and can’t adequately support today’s modern technology or community programming. I’m grateful our local libraries are receiving this funding to make the upgrades they need.”
Stephanie Harrison, Director of Patterson Library, stated, “On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Patterson Library, we are grateful to receive $176,068 in state aid for our adult library renovation, which is allowing us to make meaningful improvements to the space. This funding supports upgrades that enhance comfort, accessibility, and functionality while preserving the welcoming atmosphere our patrons value and reinforcing the library’s role as a vital community resource for reading, learning, and connection.”
Putnam Valley Library Director Amina Chaudhri also commented on their grant: “The Putnam Valley Library is thrilled to announce that we have received a New York State Construction grant! This funding is dedicated to revitalizing our Community Room—the true heart of our library. From our local Scouts and Mahjongg players to our Widows Group, this space serves everyone, yet it has remained untouched for decades. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to finally bring it into the modern era. Our planned upgrades include a new ADA-compliant exterior door, an efficient closet system, updated electrical and LED lighting, spray foam insulation, fresh paint, and new flooring.”
This allocation reflects ongoing efforts by state lawmakers and local officials to secure capital improvement funds for libraries throughout New York, supporting essential updates such as improved access for people with disabilities and upgraded facilities.
