Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C–Yorktown) visited Crompond Elementary School on November 12 to participate in “That Ought to Be a Law Day,” an event aimed at teaching fifth-grade students about state government. The program offered an interactive civics lesson, giving students the opportunity to propose ideas for new laws and learn about the legislative process.
“I was so impressed by the students’ awareness of the issues of the day and came up with some incredibly creative ideas for new laws. In doing so, they learned how legislation moves through the state Assembly and how their voices can help shape change. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did!” Slater said during his visit.
He also highlighted the value of civic engagement among young people. “When students understand how their government works, they understand how powerful their voices can be. Programs like this help build the next generation of informed, active citizens, and I’m grateful to Crompond Elementary for inviting me to be part of it.”
The event is designed to foster interest in public service and encourage students to participate in their communities by understanding how government functions.
