Assemblyman Matt Slater has joined forces with colleagues to highlight the importance of organ donation during Donate Life Month. At a recent press conference, Slater emphasized the need for more organ donors, noting that over 100,000 individuals are awaiting transplants nationwide, with nearly 8,000 of those being New Yorkers. Last year, 377 residents of New York died waiting for a transplant, even though organ donations provided new hope to many.

Slater praised the efforts of Donate Life in raising awareness about the impact of organ and tissue donation. “It’s incredible to see New Yorkers come together for a common cause—to help those in need of a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. Donate Life has done amazing work in educating and advocating for this vital cause,” Slater said.

He acknowledged the progress made in donor registration but stressed the continuing need for more donors. “While we’ve made progress in increasing donor registration in our state, the need remains critical. Too many New Yorkers are still waiting for life-saving transplants. I urge everyone who isn’t already registered to sign up and raise awareness within their own communities,” he urged.

Slater visited the Putnam County Department of Motor Vehicles, applauding their partnership with Donate Life New York State. The county is recognized for its high donor registration rate, with 60% of residents signed up. Slater highlighted the efforts of County Clerk Michael Bartolotti, saying, “Registering to become an organ donor is one of the simplest ways to make a lasting impact on someone’s life. I’m proud to work alongside leaders in our communities, like County Clerk Michael Bartolotti.”

Bartolotti emphasized the significance of the cause, stating, “As everyone knows, Donate Life is very near and dear to me. It’s an extremely important cause, and through your generous donation, you’re literally giving the gift of life to so many people.”

Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne noted, “When Putnam County promotes organ donation, we’re reaching an audience that extends beyond just our voters.” He highlighted the importance of their efforts in raising awareness across the state.
