Assemblyman Matt Slater and State Senator Peter Harckham have announced the passage of a bill in both the New York State Assembly and Senate to honor John F. McArdle, a former NYPD lieutenant. The legislation designates a section of State Route 301 in Carmel as the “John F. McArdle Memorial Highway.” This stretch runs between Belden Road and Gipsy Trail Road.
McArdle was a leader in the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) of the NYPD and played a significant role during the events following September 11, 2001. He was recognized with numerous commendations, including the NYPD Honor Legion Medal of Valor.
Even after retirement, McArdle continued his service through volunteer work, notably with organizations such as HEART 9/11 and Cops 4 Cops. His widow, Barbara McArdle, expressed gratitude for this tribute to her husband’s life and service.
Assemblyman Slater remarked on McArdle’s courage and selflessness: “We are honored to name this stretch of road in memory of a decorated law enforcement officer, a 9/11 hero and a devoted family man.” Senator Harckham added that McArdle’s commitment to service was evident throughout his life.
Kent Highway Superintendent Richard Othmer described McArdle as an “All-American” who embodied values reflected by his entire family. The dedication aims to ensure that his legacy endures within the community he served.
Slater represents New York’s 94th Assembly District while Harckham serves the 40th Senate District. Both districts include parts of Putnam County where Carmel is located.
