Following a deadly crash on the Taconic State Parkway, Assemblyman Matt Slater is urging for an immediate safety review of a heavily traveled section of the roadway. The incident on May 14 resulted in four fatalities and one critical injury. In response, Slater has formally reached out to Governor Kathy Hochul and New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, requesting a comprehensive safety assessment from the Saw Mill River Parkway interchange to Miller Hill Road.
“Tragically, the recent fatal accident in the Town of New Castle stresses the urgent need for improvements,” stated Slater. He highlighted that the absence of guardrails might have worsened the crash’s impact. “This is not an isolated incident. The frequency and seriousness of accidents on this corridor need to be addressed now.”
Slater called for an analysis of crash data over the past decade and an evaluation of current infrastructure such as guardrails, signage, rumble strips, and visibility. He stressed a proactive approach to prevent future tragedies: “The Taconic State Parkway is a critical artery for commuters and families across the Hudson Valley,” he said. “We have an obligation to ensure it is as safe as possible.”
Somers Town Supervisor Robert Scorrano supported Slater’s call for action: “As town supervisor… I stand with Assemblyman Slater in demanding immediate action… This is not just a local issue—it’s a well-documented crisis.” Scorrano emphasized that too many tragedies have occurred along this road: “Thoughts and prayers are no longer enough.”
Putnam Valley Town Supervisor Jacqueline Annabi also backed Slater’s initiative: “Putnam Valley encourages and supports Assemblyman Matt Slater in urging the Department of Transportation to conduct a thorough review.”
Yorktown Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman expressed appreciation for Slater’s efforts: “There have been some tragic accidents on the Taconic State Parkway as of late. We appreciate the efforts… Anything we can do to help keep our residents safe should be looked at and implemented.”
Assemblyman Slater’s letter to Governor Hochul highlights these concerns.
