Congressman Mike Lawler, who has been serving New York’s 17th district in the U.S. Congress since 2023, shared his views on several matters of policy through a series of tweets on May 2, 2025. Addressing budget proposals, affordable housing priorities, and foreign aid, Lawler’s tweets highlight his stance and actions on issues directly impacting his constituents and national policy.

In a tweet dated May 2, 2025, Lawler criticized a budget proposal’s impact on the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). He stated, “The proposed $4 billion cut to LIHEAP in the FY2026 budget is a reckless move that will leave Hudson Valley families out in the cold. This program is a lifeline for low-income households in New York, including many in my district, to keep their heat on.” Lawler underscores the significance of LIHEAP for many families in his district.

Later in the day, Lawler discussed affordable housing measures following a meeting with Catholic Charities USA. In his tweet from May 2, Lawler mentioned his focus on affordable housing and emphasized the importance of supporting the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit by saying, “I met with Catholic Charities USA to discuss our shared priorities on affordable housing, including support for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. This is a vital tax credit to help increase the supply of affordable housing across the country.”

In another tweet posted on May 2, Lawler expressed his views on the strategic aspects of foreign aid. He appreciated the opportunity to speak at the Consensus for Development Reform, noting that “when done right, foreign aid isn’t just compassion, it’s smart policy.” This statement reflects Lawler’s belief in the efficacy of well-executed foreign aid policies.

Lawler, born in Suffern, New York, in 1986, and a graduate of Manhattan College, has been an active participant in political discussions since his tenure in the U.S. Congress began.
