Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblyman Matt Slater have announced the completion of the Route 52 resurfacing project in the towns of Kent and Carmel. The project, funded by $3.6 million in state allocations, was carried out with support from local officials who have advocated for improvements to infrastructure in Putnam County.
The repaving began in June and covered the stretch from Fowler Avenue in Carmel to just past State Route 311 in Kent. The New York State Department of Transportation also repaired stormwater catch basins and made drainage upgrades intended to increase climate resilience. The project finished on time as scheduled.
“This project has been a long time in the making, and I’m thrilled to see it finally completed,” said Slater, who serves on the Assembly’s Transportation Committee. “Drivers will now have a smoother, safer ride through Kent and Carmel. Improving the safety and quality of life for our residents is always one of my top priorities, and I’m proud to have delivered on this commitment in partnership with Senator Harckham, Supervisor McGlasson and our local highway crews who continue to work hard for our communities.”
This phase follows an earlier section of Route 52 that was resurfaced in 2023 as part of a bipartisan initiative led by Harckham and Slater. Additional funding secured this year allowed completion of the remaining segment.
Senator Harckham commented, “This important investment, secured in partnership with Assemblyman Slater and our dedicated local leaders, represents a real win for Putnam County residents that will make travel safer, extend the life of this vital roadway, and strengthen our climate-resilient infrastructure. Working together, we’re ensuring that our roads and infrastructure reflect the quality of life our residents deserve.”
Kent Town Supervisor Jaime McGlasson said, “Since taking office, I have been advocating for the paving of Route 52, and I’m thrilled to see this project finally completed thanks to the collective efforts of our local leaders and state representatives like Senator Harckham and Assemblyman Slater. Ensuring residents’ safety and quality of life is always a top priority, and the completion of Route 52 is an important investment in our community and in the lives of Kent residents.”
Kent Highway Superintendent Richard Othmer added his appreciation: “I want to thank Kent Town Supervisor Jaime McGlasson for working with Assemblyman Slater and Senator Harckham to make this happen. Additionally, I was thrilled to hear from Supervisor McGlasson that she was able to secure funding from Assemblyman Slater and Senator Harckham to pave the Kent section of Route 311 next year.”
