Gabriela Vega-Matthews has dedicated two decades to serving the Dutchess County Department of Health as an advocate and liaison for the Hispanic community. Her efforts extend beyond this role, with active participation in various organizations and initiatives aimed at supporting and uplifting the Latino community.
Ms. Vega-Matthews is a member of the advisory board for both the Dutchess County Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley and The Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet. She has been instrumental in coordinating events like the La Guelaguetza Festival, which highlights Oaxacan culture, food, and traditions, making it one of New York State’s prominent festivals.
Her current roles include serving on the board of Sun River Health and collaborating with Latino churches in Dutchess County to address immigrant community needs. Nominated by local government leaders, she serves on the Youth Opportunity Union Advisory Committee.
In 2022, Ms. Vega-Matthews founded Casa Comunitaria de Recursos to improve resource access for Spanish-speaking families. By 2023, she led initiatives focused on mental health education and support for parents of children with disabilities within the Latino community.
She also acts as a liaison for local businesses to facilitate access to government opportunities that promote economic growth in Dutchess County. Her collaboration extends across federal, state, and local governments.
Educational partnerships are another focus area for Ms. Vega-Matthews; she works with Vassar College, Marist College, and Bard College to provide students with opportunities to engage in community projects under her leadership.
Internationally, she has facilitated consular services from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador within Dutchess County communities while assisting other organizations in accessing consular programs.
Her commitment has garnered numerous nominations and accolades from partner agencies and Latino churches recognizing her pivotal contributions.
