Congressman Mike Lawler, representing New York’s 17th district since 2023, recently shared updates on legislative achievements via social media. The tweets highlight efforts to ease tax burdens and improve healthcare access for middle-class and working families.
On May 22, 2025, Congressman Lawler announced a significant change in the state and local tax (SALT) deduction policy. “We quadrupled the SALT deduction to $40,000, easing the tax burden for middle-class and working families,” he stated. He further noted that this adjustment includes annual increases for inflation and income caps to prevent benefits from disproportionately favoring the wealthy.
In another tweet posted on the same day, Lawler outlined various tax incentives aimed at supporting working families. He listed several measures: “No tax on tips,” “No tax on overtime pay,” “Increased child tax credit,” “Tax deductions for American-made cars,” and “Tax-preferential savings accounts for children.” He emphasized these initiatives with the phrase “Promises Made, Promises Kept.”
Additionally, Congressman Lawler addressed healthcare reforms in his legislative agenda. In a separate post from May 22, he stated that new legislation aims to enhance healthcare accessibility by protecting low-income hospitals and implementing measures to reduce prescription drug costs. “Lowering Healthcare Costs: This bill strengthens healthcare access by protecting low-income hospitals and implementing reforms to lower prescription drug costs,” he tweeted.
Mike Lawler has been an active member of Congress since replacing Mondaire Jones in 2023. Prior to his current role, he served in the New York State Assembly from 2021 to 2022. Born in Suffern, New York in 1986, Lawler resides in Pearl River and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Manhattan College.
