Assemblyman Anil Beephan, Jr. (R,C-East Fishkill) has introduced a bill aimed at increasing transparency in utility bills for New Yorkers. The proposed legislation would require electric companies to provide customers with an itemized breakdown of their monthly bills. This breakdown would show what charges are being assessed, including costs related to infrastructure, the New York Power Authority, and state or Public Service Commission initiatives.

Beephan said the bill is intended to help ratepayers understand how much they are paying for various components of their electric service, especially those linked to state mandates on green energy.

“With many New Yorkers spending more and more on their utility bills every month, it is only fair they get to see what exactly they are being charged for. My bill will make sure ratepayers know how much of their money goes to infrastructure, the New York Power Authority and initiatives dictated by the state and the Public Service Commission. This will allow New Yorkers to see just how much Albany’s out-of-touch mandates are costing them, hopefully resulting in constructive dialogue between the state and the people of New York on energy policy. This legislation will finally bring New Yorkers out of the darkness and into the light when it comes to their electric bills,” said Beephan.

The full text of the bill can be accessed online.
