Assemblyman Matt Slater recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a new development project at Patterson Library. The project is supported by $20,000 in state bullet aid that Slater secured last August.
Slater, a consistent advocate for public libraries, has worked to maintain and increase funding for these community resources. During the 2024 Legislative Session, he led efforts against proposed budget cuts that threatened library services across New York. In addition to the funds for Patterson Library, Slater also obtained $20,000 each for Kent Public Library and Putnam Valley Library to aid their upgrades and expansions.
“People of all ages go to libraries and for so many different reasons besides just checking out a book; libraries offer research databases, tutoring programs, GED prep, ESL classes, free public computers and Wi-Fi, access to printers, small business resources, civil service test prep, after-school programs, local art exhibits and history archives, town halls, quiet study spaces for students and so much more,” said Slater. “I’m proud to support the Patterson Library as it begins this exciting new chapter, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on the community.”
The project aims to revitalize the Adult Library space at Patterson Library to better meet patrons’ needs. Planned improvements include two new reading nooks with comfortable seating and tables. There will be enhanced accessibility through lower shelving and updated HVAC and lighting systems aimed at increasing energy efficiency. Additionally, new carpeting and fresh paint are part of the renovations.
Patterson Library Director Stephanie Harrison expressed gratitude: “Patterson Library is excited to announce the start of construction on a series of improvements to our Adult Library designed to enhance the comfort, accessibility and overall experience for our patrons. These upgrades include two new reading nooks with comfortable seating and tables…We are deeply grateful to Assemblyman Slater for helping secure essential funding for this project.”
Patterson Town Supervisor Richard Williams also thanked those involved: “I want to thank Assemblyman Slater for securing this critical funding and the Patterson Library for their continued commitment to serving residents of all ages. When we invest in our libraries, we ensure they can continue investing in us.”
