Assemblyman Matt Slater has initiated a Back to School Supplies Drive in collaboration with the Putnam Community Action Partnership. The initiative aims to assist 500 school-age children in need as they prepare for the new academic year.

The drive is collecting backpacks and $25 gift cards to stores like Staples, Target, or Walmart. These items will be distributed to local families across the region. Donations are being accepted until Wednesday, August 13, with several drop-off locations available in Putnam and Westchester counties.

“No kid should have to worry about whether they have a backpack or basic supplies on the first day of school,” said Slater. “This drive gives every student the chance to walk into class feeling prepared and supported. A small donation can go a long way, and it’s one of the simplest ways we can show up for each other as neighbors. If you’re able to, please consider donating!”

Marisa O’Leary, Director of Putnam CAP, emphasized the importance of having basic school supplies for low-income children. She stated that these supplies can level the playing field and foster a sense of belonging crucial for academic success and self-esteem. “Putnam CAP is grateful for Assemblyman Slater’s unwavering support in highlighting this critical need and encouraging our community to donate.”

Further information about drop-off locations can be found on Assemblyman Slater’s Facebook page or by referring to the flyer.
