Assemblyman Matt Slater joined first responders, families, and state officials at the 2025 annual EMS memorial dedication ceremony at the Empire State Plaza. The event honored five emergency medical services personnel who lost their lives in service to their communities.
One of the honorees was FDNY Emergency Medical Technician Christopher Swierkowski. He was a longtime resident of Assemblyman Slater’s district and passed away on May 11, 2024, from a certified World Trade Center-related illness linked to his work during the rescue and recovery efforts following the 9/11 attacks.
“Today, we remember a true hometown hero,” said Slater. “Christopher’s decades of service to the fire department and the people of New York City left an impact that will not be forgotten. He dedicated his life to helping others and responded without hesitation when his city needed him most. It was a privilege to be present today to honor Christopher and all of the brave EMS professionals who gave their lives in service to others.”
Swierkowski served New York City for over 24 years. He is survived by his wife Joann, daughter Shelby, and grandson Carter.
